Beauty and the Beast is a Disney animated movie first shown in 1991. A wonderful love story, it tells the story of Belle who tries to free her father from the castle of the Beast and offers herself in his place. She promises that she will remain in the castle forever. To begin with Belle sees the Beast as a monster whilst he sees her as stubborn and difficult. Eventually they start to see each other in a different light, forming a close friendship. The Beast falls in love with Belle but cannot believe that she will ever love him. The Beast is stabbed by an angry mob and dies in Belle’s arms. She then confesses her true love for the Beast just as the last petal falls from the enchanted rose. Belle’s love revives the Beast and the curse that has been placed on him is lifted and he returns to being Prince Adam. Belle and the Prince are married and live happily ever after.
From the movie came an academy award winning song, “Beauty and the Beast” sung by Celine Dion. This beautiful ballad tells the story of the love developing between Belle and the Beast. It was extremely successful around the world, reaching number 9 in the US, and became Dion’s first international hit.
